Put Good Knowledge To Use

Our Precision Ag Specialists are sharing our best tips and reminders for ensuring the best soil sampling practices.

CONSISTENCY IS IMPORTANT

CONSISTENCY IS IMPORTANT

  • Be sure and soil sample at a consistent depth.
  • Mark your probe so that you sample the same depth every time.
  • Recommended sample depth for no-till is 4 inches, conventional till is 6 inches.
  • If you are not sure, give us a call at 855.768.2900, or check with your lab.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

    You will need:

  • A plastic bucket
  • A chrome soil probe
  • A permanent marker
  • A charging cable for your device
  • Your smartphone or tablet with Soil Test Pro installed
  • Use clean equipment, free of rust or carryover dirt to avoid contamination

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

  • The best time to soil sample is when you need results. Whether you sample in the fall or the spring, try to sample in the same season every year.
  • Soil sample before a lime, fertilizer or manure application. After all, that is the point!
  • Sample when the soil conditions are favorable (not too dry, not too wet).

GRID POINT SAMPLING

GRID POINT SAMPLING

  • Choose a grid size that best represents your field. Try several. Remember the grid is just a guide.
  • Pull enough cores (8-10 cores per sample point) to fill the sample bag properly.
  • It works like this: Pull cores and place them in the bucket. Pour the entire contents of the bucket into the bag. Pull enough cores (8-10), to fill up the bag to the indicated fill line. That way you don’t have to mix the soil. The lab dries and grinds the soil before testing.

AVOID NON-REPRESENTATIVE LOCATIONS

AVOID NON-REPRESENTATIVE LOCATIONS

Avoid pulling cores from areas that you know aren’t representative of the field, such as:

  • Old fencerows
  • Areas used for manure or hay storage and livestock feeding
  • Areas where lime has been piled in the past
  • Non-crop areas.
